Ok seriously now. where do you live? we may have the location detail in our profile, but most people (like me) use it to write funny stuff instead. So... where do YOU live?
Me?
I live in South Africa. for those who don't know, that's at the southern part of Africa. (logic defying stuff). In south africa, i live in Cape Town, which is at the southern part of south africa. so i live at the tip of Africa.

I live in the UK, England to be precise and man its dead.
after talking to people on MSN they always seem to make their country sound great but not here... its drugs and drama to boot. the only thing that IS nice is the history and the places that have withstood the test of time. other then that what a dump.
Still I cannot complain as there is a LOT worse places out there like... The south pole!!!

Well I'm from Montreal, as it says in my prof., which is in the province of Quebec in eastern Canada, but not maritime Canada thats even farther east. Its the second largest French speaking city in the world, Paris beats us T_T and the second largest city in Canada at about 4 million people really only a small city on a global scale. Um... Its hosted the Olympics, the World Exposition, the Commonwealth games and thats pretty much all thats happened here in the last 100 years, except for a few terrorist in the 70s.
The way its going I wonder if we get one person from each continent?
NYC, NY But it's not that exciting to those who actually live here, though tourists seem to have a blast... You can almost always find something interesting by riding the subway around the city. Yesterday these someone taught these Japaneese tourists how to say "Where you at dawg!" and they were amusing themselves by saying it over and over in the E train.
This morning When the R train passed under the river at 60 mph some tourists were kinda freaking out then they really tensed up when the conductor hit the breaks suddenly... most other new yorkers didnt even flinch and just kept reading the paper and drinking coffee.

I spent a week in NYC. I'm sorry to say I really did not enjoy it. NYC is good for broadway and shopping. If you're not there for one or both of those, it'll just be a very smelly city with scary people ^-^

HA! Ohh so funny, it's like talking to somebody from Toronto here. I wasn't going to respond to you i feel tiredsleepy, but this gave me a reason to. Yes we're the center of conservitism, but we also have a level of social structure the rest of Canada won't catch up to for 10years. Even with the massive loss of money due to the 80's oil bust, we were still declining in our provincial debt, unlike the rest of the nation, who has since gotten further and further into the hole, and then taking some of the money we make, with that whole equalisation thing. I know we had a huge boost up with the oil industry, but some provinces are just wasting their money.
Sorry for being totally off topic. --> S.W. Calgary, AB. In the basement of my house at the moment.

Except we outnumber you 3 to 1, and I would not praise Alberta's economic policies so much, they produce a ridiculous amount of polution and I don't see how the province deserves praise from having oil sands in the north and get government policy that does everything it can to support Alberta, whereas Newfoundland had to fight to get the money from its oil revenues and when it wanted to pass a furrowfare law to force oil companies to use Newfoundland's oil (Exactly how Alberta has) the pm turned them down, probably because there are only 2 conservative mps in Newfoundland and Labrador. Moreover, Alberta has the most privatized health care in the country. Your premiere has been witnessed saying racist and sexist comments and has showed up drunk to parliament, and yet still get elected. The oil industry which is responsible for the vast majority of Alberta's profits is from a natural resource which belongs to the country not the province so the equalisation payments are fair. Your colleges suck and prairies are boring.
Finally, I'm not french my family came from England in the 1790s.
Flyin
11-15-2006, 12:39 AM
Prairies are not dull. Half the fun I have is in Sask. or Man. And we also have the mountains right beside us, I drive an hr+1/2 to go skiing. Yes, we are a major source of pollution, but more money was recently invested into our educational systems for devising new forms of renewable energy, then your entire school systems budgets over the past few years. Our Premeir, who had been in office for decades, is a drunk, racist, sexist and a very simple guy. That's why he didn't steal from gov't money, provides a simple solution to problems. Instead of the massive wastefull beaurocracy that goes on out east, wasting millions of dollars on a guys wage, because he needs to come up with a plan to feed 10,000 people, Ralph Klein used that money to feed them, clothe them and shelter them. Ohh what an idiot. Newfoundlands Oil also belongs to the French, because of a little Island out there within the territorial limits of that oil. We have the most privatized health care, but still have a better public health care system then the rest of the country. Ohh, what a travesty. I don't mind the equalization payments so much, but I hate how some Gov'ts spend them. Instead of paying off their increasing debt, they put all of it into transit, and Gov't officials raises. Nothing that really helps, but more money for the people deciding what to do with it. 3/1, yes, you have more population, but what has that done for you so far? Send them over here, we have a worker shortage, we have TOO MUCH MONEY!
i_feel_tiredsleepy
11-15-2006, 12:51 AM
Your schools don't receive more money than Quebec schools, McGill University has the highest amount of donations and investments in Canada by far and is the number one university in Canada. The Alberta government is completely obsessed with the improving the condition of the rich and screwing anyone without money, and the only thing I really hate about Alberta is the absurd resistance to gay marriage and its insistance on destroying the public health care system. Well our higher population has insured that we have a much louder voice in parliament than your province, last time I checked 1/3 of canadian prime ministers have been from Quebec and the longest serving PM Trudeau was from Quebec, and 5 out of the last 8 pms have been from Quebec.

I think you're now the one off topic kjrav.
Yes, McGill U. Has always recieved more money, but our Gov't, with its massive surplus, just, JUST, invested TONS of money into programs to develop sustainable energy resources. It was in the news...friday I think. Yes they oppose gay marrige, and provide some privatized health care, cause we're not a bunch of communists! LOL. Not seriously trying to insult you, but our Gov't wanted the doctors to have the freedom to choose how they performed their practice, they don't make half the doctors go one way or the other. Yes, our Gov't is made up of people from Quebec and Onterio, but that just proves that there's more of you to vote in said people. It's like here, one of my teachers wants to run for political office, but wont here, because he wouldn't have a chance of winning. He's Pakastani, but born and raised here. He would never get voted in because he's not the white, cowboy attitude, rough and tumble, drunk racist the rest of us are. That's why majority will usually go with something they find easily similar, as opposed to the right choice. --> NOT SAYING PM'S HAVE BEEN THE RIGHT OR WRONG CHOICE!
i_feel_tiredsleepy
11-15-2006, 01:18 AM
I'm sorry but I strongly believe every human being has a basic right to life, therefore they have a basic right to receive health care, which means the health care has to be free to supply it to all human beings. And I won't be dettered by being called a communist, as an NDP supporter I've become accustomed to it.
Flyin
11-15-2006, 01:24 AM
Lol, I wasn't actually trying to insult you. Sorry if I did, but it just fit the context so well.
I know that everyone has a right to health care, here we have both, and everyone who doesn't pay extra for privatized health care, gets the same universal health care as you. One time in Banff, there were 2 others in the beds beside me. One was a guy from England, with a broken leg, and the other was a guy I knew, with a broken back, and just happened to be broke, ironically. And me, I broke my wrist. Anyways, all 3 of us were treated, both private and public, and we (Me and the English Dude) went out that night to St. James Gate in Banff for drinks after, both injured and healed by means of two opposite health care systems. A few weeks later the guy who broke his back was getting his treatments and physio, all on universal health care. It's not as bad as you think.

Not a racist but a nationalist there is a difference, and technically although I don't think they teach native history in the USA, there were people in USA before Europeans arived. Many people study the Iroquois nations, and the Algonquin natives, not to mention western tribes which I'm not so familiar with.
I find Iroquois history to be interesting because they were one of the few peoples in the world who were matriarchal, every tribe was led by a woman, and the most important figure in their religion was a woman. Although decisions involving war and hunting were deligated to a male chieftan.
I know I didnt. We started from the pilgrims being persecuted in England and getting on this ship called a Mayflower so they can find their own country where they can practice a then thought to be radical movement of christianity, then it goes into the revolutionary war, and eventually the American civil war over slavery and then the industrial revolution where we used the profits of slavery to move forward technologically and then i think we touched on WW1.
The only thing I remember was that these two explorers, Luis and Clark used a native american guide named Saquijewia to help then explore the yet uncharted west side of the continent... Wow, i paid attention... And I'm not a born American either.

Highschool history started with evolutionary theory of man, africa, then babylon, china and india, then roman empire, middle ages in europe and finally with crossing the atlantic. Then Canadian history in grade 10 starts with some native history, then french and english colonies, we touch on the American revolution and its influence on Canada (like the failed invasion of Quebec and the foundation of the colonies of New Brunswick and Upper Canada for the American Loyalist who left the USA but didn't want to live in Catholic colonies. Then it sorta gets Quebec centric and apparently unless it was an insult to french Canadians nothing else happened in the rest of Canada lol. They don't cover much war history in Quebec, since every single war Canada has been involved in was vehemently opposed by Quebec.
Man you guys are smart where do you learn things like that! (claps)

Im from ENGLAND and im damn proud of my country...live in one of the bigger citys in england called Manchester.
have some pride for your country honestly, yeah theres alot of drugs and pricks who live here but were better off than liveing in america (no affence). in england we have NHS (National Health System) which means we can go to a doctors or the hospital without haveing to pay.
we also have a legal drinking age of 18 not 21 we also leave school at 16 and then go to college at 16 and generally finish at 18 and then you can go to university if you so choose. and everyone gets to go to uni if your grades are ok....you get grants from the goverment to pay for it but when you get a decent enough job you have to pay it back slowly bit by bit....
our countrys great also for its food, im a chef and i know what foods like from millions of different countrys and you just cant beat a roast lamb dinner or a traditional english meat and potatoe pie. and my god we invited the yorkshire pudding for christ sake lol.
umm...yea im waffleing on for qite a long time...sorry i just like my country! lol

Well Quebec has universal health care, socialized education (my tuition is 1500 a semestre), we also finish school at the same time as the english and go to college first (in the USA they call university and college the same thing and they end up doing the same amount of school actually since it generally takes 4 years for a major in the USA and its 3 in Quebec)
So I guess we have everything that apparently makes the UK good...
lol Except we also have a lot of remaining wilderness and clean air :D.
Unfortunately we also have 6 million French people, but you learn to deal with them lol.

Canada is pretty much England, without history, famous places, polititions, prisoners. But we're huge!
Switzerland has banks, USA has tanks, but they can keep them thanks, 'cause they just don't amount. Because when you get down to it, you find out what the truth is, it isn't what you do with it it's the size that counts!

The way its going I wonder if we get one person from each continent?

the other 50% i speak afrikaans, which is one of the 11 languages in south africa. afrikaans sounds alot like dutch. and german.
there are some people here who are english and some who are afrikaans. both can speak both, but each have their preference... so i have english and afrikaans friends. my parents are afrikaans though, andi do all my work/classes in afrikaans, but my textbooks are in english.

and the dutch setlers, lets not forget them! thanks to them, afrikaans came to be (which was known as kitchen dutch before it turned to afrikaans)
it is also spoken in moderation on the movie Blood Diamond. yay. but leo apparently doesn't pull the accent
I believe it was at the beginning of the 20th century(1899-1903 ?) when Great Britain had a war with South Africa and eventually won(due to numbers)...However the victory came with great losses, because last two years by the time when SA had lost most of their forces, they decided to fight with GB in small groups behind enemy lines attacking secretly and causing as much damage as possible. At the end they had to give up though because GB threatened to kill everyone unless they didn't surrender...

i_feel_tiredsleepy
08-13-2008, 02:11 PM
You forgot Central America.
There are no standard forms of the term "continent" that recognize Central America. Although, convention varies by countries.
The typical definition is 7 continents, NA, SA, Europe, Asia, Australia, Antartica, and Africa.
However, occasionally people use a 7 continent convention which recognizes Oceania as a continent instead of Autralia alone (the region of the philipines and indonesia, with australia).
However, then again there is the 5 continent convention which is America, Europe, Asia, Oceania, and Africa. (Oceania in this case including australia, and south east asian islands.) Which, is the system used by the Olympics, and the 5 inhabited continents represented by the Olympic rings, Antartica is ignored in this model.
All in all, the term "continent" is relatively meaningless.
Now classically, Continent actually means continuous connected land, those that argue for literal interpretation of the continents say the continents should be: Eurasia, America, Africa, Australia, and Antartica. This system is widely taught now, but isn't gaining strong popular support because of the traditional seperation of the Americas and Eurasia that have been around for hundreds of years.
