yup they were all completely useless. none of them had what it takes.even though naruto saved sakura sasuke and the whole damned willage from a second attack from a kyubi type monster, withought sacrificing himself i might add. which the 4th couldnt do. of course this might spark a whole debate about shikaku's strengh in comparrison to kyubi's.

I think its the fault of the turors that so many failed, i mena if strategy is the all important part of passing thee test then the students should have been made aware of this, i mean they all basically trained to increase their brawn not ther strategem.

well, they want to see if they can figure it out on their own, i mean they want them to be independant at least in the basics.

lol..ah the chunin exams...that seems like so long ago...lol I think it was. No one diserved really to pass except Shikamaru...the reason the others didn't I think:

Neji: umm...he...talked too much...and lost? I'm not totally sure why they didn't promote him.

Naruto: he talked too much about ethics...and maybe because he used kyuubi's power and they didn't like that lol

Sasuke: he's powerful and all, but he's too cocky and didn't really think of any strategy

Gaara: he turned into a monster and obviously had a control problem.

Temari: her tactic wasn't the best (althought she couldn't really do much else)

I really think Shino would've past. He's calm, intellegent, and very destructive so he would've done well had he gotten the chance.

for guidance and teaching you new things.
Look at Jairaya and Naruto, he just shows Naruto the Rasengan and then Naruto learns everything himself

I was discussing this with a friend the other day. Heres the skinny on the Chuunin exam:

They only promote genin who display certain qualities that define them as leaders. Things like strategy are good for successfully defeating the enemy but if you don't know how to properly handle the situation you could get you and your team killed rather quickly. Shikamaru was picked because he knew how to properly identify the enemy and breakdown courses of winning by accounting his and Temari's strengths and abilities. We see that good old Shika can show these qualities when they are preparing to get Sasuke. If Orochimaru didn't screw everthing up I strongly belive Shino would have been picked or at least considered to be promoted.

Oh and if Sasuke wasnt such an arrogent bastard by then with the cursed seal screwing with his head...he might have made Chuunin as well. You can look at every team and see a cool-headed strategist that displays the attitude and qualities of a middle-level ninja (Except Sasuke like i said and Neji cause hes a bastard too :wink: )

Which fight were you refering to? If its the one with Garaa later on during the finals, its true that he showed real strength out there but there were a few things that showed he wasnt really proficient as a leader.
1. Though the 1000 years of pain/explosive tag part was creative and effective (not to mention hilarious :D ) Naruto did waste a lot of unnessary chakra on the clones.
2. He did throw nothing but power out there. He didn't take time to think much (not that thats his style heh)
3. His combat performance wasnt too hot either, like when Gamabunta commented on the headbutt.

While its true there werent many ways to get around Garaa's defense, Naruto still could have done better i think. But in the way he did it, he did grow as a ninja.

And he thought very fast! he used a shadowreplication and dug a hole himself to fool neji! and thats why he beat him! he also reminded himself about the 2 kinds of chakra! (btw in jump fiesta 2004 he also thinks very good, but that's after the exams I guess)

Only Shikamaru would promoted to Chunnin because he was the only one who showed EXTENSIVE planning. By giving up... he showed the judges that this was a GAME for him. All the other fighters were all serious about it, doing it as if it was the fight of their life. That's not what the judges want to see. The judges want to see someone who can beat the TEST, not their opponent. That's what Shikamaru did by giving up after winning... his lack of interest in the test showed that he knew he was above it.

shikamaru became chuunin because he was very good at strategically planning and he also knew when to give up. for exmple if you go on a mission and you complete the objective and get everyone killed thats not good enough. so shikamaru responsibly knew when to give up. i think that naruto wouldve been promoted if he had his enxt match and shino too. and i think if sasuke got to finish his match and maybe move on to the next one against naruto he wouldve also become chuunin
