Lesson one: Pronounciation and Hiragana Part I.
The last one got obliterated by H-Chan, hopefully this one stays ^_^.

There are three types of letter structures in the Japanese writing system: Hiragana, which is the lettering system by default. Katakana, which is usually used for names or writing English-Language wording to help Japanese people speak English. Kanji, which is Chinese characters. Kanji is the most difficult and I only know like....three Kanji words so I won't teach you guys those :P.

Hiranga
あ - a (ah sound as in awesome)
い - i (ee sound as in see)
う - u (oo sound as in ooze)
え - e (eh sound as in yes)
お - o (oh sound as in whole)

Once you learn these basic sounds everything else is easy to pronounce and say.

K
か - Ka
き - Ki
く - Ku
け - Ke
こ - Ko

S
さ - Sa
し - Shi
す - Su
せ - Se
そ - So

T
た - Ta
ち - Chi
つ - Tsu
て - Te
と - To

N
な - Na
に - Ni
ぬ - Nu
ね - Ne
の - No

H
は - Ha
ひ - Hi
ふ - Hu (The H lettering here can also be an F Hu/Fu)
へ - He
ほ - Ho

M
ま - Ma
み - Mi
む - Mu
め - Me
も - Mo

R
ら - Ra
り - Ri
る - Ru
れ - Re
ろ - Ro

Y
や - Ya
ゆ - Yu
よ - Yo

W
わ - Wa
を - Wo

ん - N

Note: I will explain everything else after I get all the lettering completed

To be continued...Lesson one: Pronounciation and Hiragana Part II.

If you want to learn basic japanese go google a game called Slime Forest it teaches you basic japanese

... Hellchild try it sometime, before you give advice :<

Hu (The H lettering here can also be an F Hu/Fu)

it's just Fu, as in Mt. Fuji

Hiragana is sort of like a photenic alphabet, some childrens books are written in purely kana (Hiranaga and Kitanana); but it's it is usually used for words that may have come from chinese language.
(example: konichiwa [hello] if one would deside to write in kana form would be こにちわ)

--why is this important to know? Because the later form of kanas (Kitanana) is used for non-chinese decent words, such as Amerikajin [America]. You would not use Hiranaga characters, but another set called Kitanana characters to write it.

... I would probably be better at explaining learning japanese than Mousie :P

or maybe it's a book where it has good steps in order to learn japanese
you don't need a good japanese speaker to help you
sometimes people can learn by themselves

Is it possible a pronunciation has more than one meaning?

retsam

you don't need a good japanese speaker to help you
sometimes people can learn by themselves

Well if you want to be looked at strange, and then end up saying wrong things... Then don't have someone help you with your speech, else you definintly need help.

Is it possible a pronunciation has more than one meaning?

If you mean can a word, have more than one meaning? Yes, which is why having someone to practice speaking is very important.
Examples:
HAshi (箸) = chopsticks; haSHI (橋) = bridge.
SEImei (生命) = life; seiMEI (声明) = statement.
KAmi (神) = god; kaMI (紙) = paper.
MOmo (股) = thigh; moMO (桃) = peach.
KAu (飼う) = to raise; kaU (買う) = to buy.
KAshi (歌詞) = lyrics; kaSHI (貸し) = loan.
NAru (成る) = to become; naRU (鳴る) = to ring/call.
Ima (今) = now/present; iMA (居間) = living room.
SAke (鮭) = salmon; saKE (酒) = sake/alcohol.
The capitalized syllables are high pitched syllables.

I took Japanese for three years. (Japanese III self-study) Its not hard for me to explain. By time I was on my third year of learning I had to teach basics to the Japanese I students.

I made this thread to help people learn BASIC Japanese. Meaning, people here are not ready to learn Kanji yet. -_-' mendokuse. I've made one before and people learned from it just fine. (It got deleted during the H-Chan era)

I think I'll make a Korean one too At least no one will think my Korean is crap -_-.

Three years actually. But I didn't learn a lot on Kanji -_-. It was mostly speaking, getting around, writing full sentences. Basically, I know Japanese...I just dont know full on Kanji. I'd have to live/learn it in Japan for a couple years. But....

I for nothing more now then a love of innosence a love that will change the world that kind of first love by these is the feeling that brought this love to life?

That is a really cute name  . I've watched the anime but not until now have I realized how cute of an pet name it is.

On topic. I self taugh myself Katakana and then liek got a teacher to do Hiragana with me just started that like the first week of summer, eventually I learned I guess I shoulda learned Hiragana first. Pooy I say. Mousie, what did you learn first?

Mousie
07-14-2006, 10:39 AM
@ Chidongan. They are fairly easy to learn For the most, making flash cards helps you remember them faster.

@ HinataFan.
I learned Hiragana first. Then Katakana. I already knew numbers considering its written the same in Chinese and Korean (half Korean here). But of course, I had to learn how to count certain things. Like counting people and counting pencils have different suffixes. It can get confusing at times.

Tip:
Remember or Memorize, numbers, times, days, and months.

if you wanna learn japanese. learn Hiragana first. and how they sound. then learn their pronounciation. then move on to katakana. then move on to learn some words.

Learn what all of the symboles mean, learn how the words work, and learn how the sentance structure works, then you might be able to hold yourself in a conversation. You must also know the difference between Hiragana and Katakana. Otherwise you will be hearing some fked up things.

Hey all. I had a question. Im play a game called Amtgard... which is basically a medieval fighting game... and Im currently trying to create myself some garb.

On this garb I want to place some a couple sentences in Japanese. Obviously they have several different systems... but I was hoping that someone would be able to help me out. What I want to use is this:

'I am the arms of God, who wields the claws of the Devil'

I know its a bit silly. But I like it for some reason. So if anyone could help me out I'd appreciate it.

just go on a japanese english translator

English to Japanese and vise versa can get you different results.

Also "japanese for dummies" is a good read on the basics of japanese.
