Well tthe fact that kisame said himself b4 they fought jariaya, "maybe you can fight him equally, but I cannot" makes it clear who is stronger! Even thought I like kisame he basically says himself that itachi is stronger

what is not definate about this match up is we know soo little of kisame. Among the akatsuki he is revered as having bountiful supply of chakra. and yet in their little encounter with jiraiya irrespective of what itachi said it was itachi who helped them escape from the frogs stomach.

i really cant put my finger on who is better or is going to win. itachi with his MS or Kisame with his samehada and loads of chakra.
one thing that should be considered is that itachi may be able to copy or already know most of kisame's moves since they are partners.

let me let you all in on a little secret, if you know your opponet in the word of naruto, 9 times out of 10, they will devise a strategy to beat them

1st exsample, zabuza after the 1st fight w/ kakashi
well......... actually I dont feel like putting 10 exsample up but you should get the general idea, the reason I bring that up is cause kakashi fought itachi b4 and was well prepared for him, gai never seen kisame fight, neither did anyone from his team, therefore they didnt know what to expect, and got caught, thats why kisame beat them the way he did, and Itachi didnt look so good!

I just somehow get the impression that kisame is a lot more experienced and older than Itachi is. I'm not sure how I'm getting that impression but I feel that Kisame is stronger than in terms of experience.
The two have very different styles when it comes to fighting though. Itachi relies much on genjutsu and his sharingan while Kisame relies on his water techniques and his sword.

Either way, in my perspective, kisame has a slight edge over Itachi.

Exactly! Theres no proof that Gai couldnt beat Itachi. Itachi would forsure hurt Gai in many ways but Gai already knows the defence against Mange so he pretty good till that point. And secondly Rock Lee wasted Sasuke and sasuke was using his sharingan. just becasue you can see everything doesnt mean you can block it in time.
And Thirdly Kakashi has a good chance against kisame at this point in the manga so i would think that naruto and him would be a good match. Kakashi would be able to copy most of Kisame's jutsu's and possibly counter them like he did with Zabuza. And im sure naruto would be doing some fast ass fighting.

I doubt Gai could beat Itachi without gates. Any time people talk about Itachi in a fight, its always centered around Mangekyou. You guys forget that hes adept at everything else and is especially strong in jutsus. He seems to love genjutsu, his ninjutsus are unreadably fast, and his taijutsu is pretty decent too. He seems pretty unrivalled in ninjutsu and genjutsu, but I dunno bout his taijutsu. Weve seen that he kicked Kurenai and Sasuke's asses and was on par with Kakashi in taijutsu, but other than that i dunno. Either way, I think Mangekyou is just a kind of finisher that hell use if hes in a fix or just feels like doing it quick.

Actually I think I might be going a bit far when I say that Kakashi is on par with Itachi hand to hand. I was thinking of when Kakashi, Chiyo, Naruto, and Sakura fought the 30% power Itachi clone, so of course Kakashi could hold him off. Even during the fight, though, I might be wrong but I think Itachi was the first one to use Genjutsu while hes fighting with Taijutsu.

In any case, Itachi is damn strong.

Itachi is at a disadvantage against Jiraiya. Since Jiraiya primarily uses summoning techniques, which the Sharingan can neither dispel (like Genjutsu) or copy (since Itachi hasn't signed the pact). Furthermore he's a mid range fighter who uses large scale attacks, which makes the Sharingan's taijutsu reading ability rather worthless, and also keeps Jiraiya out of the range of Itachi's Genjutsu attacks.

But that's beside the point.

Kisame, from what we've seen (I'm bringing the manga into this, but I won't spoil) is a close range fighter, who uses lots of water type Ninjutsu to offbalance and disorient his enemy into dropping their guard. Allowing him to take them out with a few hits from Samehada. His sword also allows him to absorb chakra from his opponents, so fighting against him for a long period of time is a bad idea, since you'll eventually lose all your chakra.

Itachi is a mid range Genjutsu type. He usually opens up a fight with a powerful Genjutsu, which usually leaves the enemy open for a powerful finishing attack. If this opening volley is dodged or deflected he keeps his distance, softening the enemy with a series of mid range ninjutsu (including katon gouyakku no jutsu) and genjutsu. If he's facing a very strong opponent he'll try and take them out with his mangekyou sharingan, but this more of his trump card, he doesn't like using it that much.

He's also got all the defensive abilites of the sharingan, which allows him to counter and dodge most techniques thrown at him.

In a fight, I'd say Kisame would win, assuming he could avoid Itachi's Genjutsu traps long enough to drain most of his chakra.

No, I think strenth is in numbers, no matter how strong Itachi is, he is still one person.

He wouldnt have been able to cause near the destruction to konoha as Oro did, and in my humble opinion anyway I feel Oro could beat him!

As far as his statement he might have know Itachi figured out his weakness, or hes not good enough to deal w/ his genjutsu, but I feel he will find a way around it!

I think it depends on how much you look into story telling and character devolpment in general. Itachi is written very much like darth vader (tall, dark, man of few words, etc.) While Kisame is written more like boba fett (side-kick, can give the good guys a run for their money, but ultimately takes orders from darth.) Just judging by the way the characters are portrayed, I would say that Itachi would- or should I say, kishimoto would write the fight in a way that would make itachi win.
