do you already have the server ready for internet use? And are you using Cpanel or Ensim? Or are you trying to serve off of your PC?

I think my router might be messing things up, I guess I could try direct connecting, but there should be a way to get through the router, no?

ive done this before... before anything... if your using a residential internet package, check with your isp if its okay to run a ftp server. some isps are real picky about that type of thing. second, you need to configure your router to let internet requests pass to your machine. to do this, first set your comp to a static ip. then if you have a linksys router, you need to enable DMZ or port fowarding. if you want to use dmz, it opens all ports up to your computer. i suggest making sure you have no viruses or any programs that open up ports and are insecure running. if you want to use port fowarding, it just opens up the ports you tell it to, which is more secure. beware though u need to open up a range of ports besides 21 for passive mode. okay for more help... just post here or AIM me (MittyLinux) or email me (mitty12@softhome.net).

ok i know that was confisuing... so why not aim me

I'll aim you if this question can't be anwsered easily. Once I open up DMZ, are all my ports exposed or just the ones I request - plus, how do I set up a static ip?

once you open up DMZ, all open ports are exposed to the internet. you can only get a static internet IP if you ISP allows you to, which they usually dont for residential internet. to get a LAN ip, which would probably be a good idea, you need (for win xp and 2000) to go into control panel, network and dialup connections, right click your connection and click properties, then click on "TCP/IP (Internet Protocol)" in the box on the screen, and click properties, and then its pretty self explanitory. yeah it would probably be a good idea to IM me cause its too hard to communicate over forums instantly :D
