Also Gladiator, Braveheart, and Shrek, which have been said, are great movies.

the only reason I hated Braveheart is because of all the historic inaccuracies. I couldn't stand watching it because it's as if they just made up the story completely.

Haearnbran
05-03-2004, 08:40 PM
Well, considering it was directed by Mel Gibson, who's from Australia, I wasn't prepared to watch the movie from a historic perspective. If you look at the movie just from a great story point of view, it was fine.

What the fuck is that supposed to mean?

Why are you people so against Kill Bill? I think most of you have missed the point of this movie. It's inspired by a combination of old Japanese fighting movies, Anime, and a little 70s. That's why Quentin made it. I thought it was a brilliant movie.

'The Day After Tomorrow' does look very good.
'Troy' Looks ok... If you are prepared to watch a movie for fighting sequences alone. From a historical perspective here's another one to hate. Like a lot of movies, it pisses all over history.

He made a movie about Jesus. As far as i'm concerned he's not from the middle east, nor was he alive 2000 years ago. Didn't affect the accuracy of it.

As far as I'm concerned, no one can be accurate about Jesus because it happened 2000 years ago. Plus, Christianity has spread to the four corners of the world, unlike the story of WIlliam Wallace.

I agree. I've seen Van Helsing.
Potentially a good movie but they RUINED it. :(
OhhHHhh. The character Van Helsing is not supposed to be such a bitch. And a nice effort blending the stories, but I didn't like it. Story was weak... Really weak.

Only positive thing I can say about this... The Van Helsing werewolf rocked.

Just to add something. I didn't suggest Mel Gibson accurately presented what DID happen. I'm saying that his movie was accurate to Christian scriptures.

Troy was... OK...

Ohh.. As I imagined it pissed on history. The camera work during action sequences was just terrible... Too many inappropriate close ups making it hard to see what the hell was going on.

The acting was all good.
It's still worth watching, just don't expect much.

Yah. Troy was alright. Achilles was done poorly in my opinion; they should've stuck to Homer's Achilles instead of making changes on him.

Hector was definitely done well though.

I don't know what movie you guys saw, but Troy sucked balls. The only things that they did even remotely well was the Horse and Achilles really cool attacks. Otherwise the deviation from Homer and the acting was enough to make you sick. First of all, the elimination of the Gods--I suppose it was tolerable except that along with it they removed the seer Cassandra and made it seem really foolish to trust in the Gods, it was almost a theme, and if you've read the story you know that the Gods basically determined the outcome.

Everyone was clean-shaven, I don't look as well-groomed as half of the characters and they supposedly have been in battle for 10 year!?

Orlando Blooms acting made me drop my snowcaps it was so bad. He couldn't choose a facial expression, his face just kept twitching.

Achilles was DEAD by the time they sacked Troy.

Briseis was NOT a priestess (I assume they are making up for the lack of Cassandra.)

Agamemnon did NOT die. He returned home and was there murdered by his own wife, the queen.

These are just a few of the problems...

Anyway, I agree with you all the Boondock Saints and Equilibrium are probably the must-sees on these lists so far. And be looking out for the Boondock Saints sequel "All-Saints Day" (I have no idea when it's coming out.) Oh and those of you who have not seen Devil's Advocate should do so. Sure Keanu sucks, but Al Pacino is amazing...which brings us to the necessity that you all see Scarface as well...the list goes on...

you should know by now that NO MOVIE based on a book will EVER be accurate... it was entertaining, thus it was a good movie... you're overthinking too much.... apparently you must think that the Lord of the Rings movies are bad as well.. true they're quite different from the books, but regardless they're entertaining.

well then.. that's ok... it's fine to not like a movie because you don't find it entertaining, but to not like it because it's not like the book, or like the comic... that's just silly

I've recently come to this conclusion myself because I didn't like Spiderman or LotR at first... but then I got to thinking that movies are just supposed to be entertaining, and as long as they're entertaining then they're serving their purpose, whether they're like the original or not.

Dweezil, the movie deviated FAR TOO MUCH from the book. The other thing is that it WASN'T entertaining. You are right about LOTR, It was good even though it had some inaccuracies, but it didn't change characters and it at least had people die when they were supposed to...even if it was in the wrong manner. However Troy did not do this, it sucked. As I stated earlier the only thing they did well was Achilles's attacks. The movie was awful, the inaccuracies was just ONE of the reasons I was pissed about wasting my $8.

A lot of you are saying that Van Helsing sucked (and you're spelling it wrong every time, too -_-)...

It wasn't THAT bad...the action was good, and the graphics were good.

Of course the acting sucked, and the story wasn't deep enough, but I saw that part of the movie as a comedy.

My all time favorite movie is Battle Royale which is the most entertaining thing i have ever seen in my life. For those of you who care its about a class of 9th grade kids brought to an island and forced to kill each other . Kinda dark but very entertaining and hell even funny at times.

On a brighter note Half Baked is very funny

hm.. my favorite LOTR movie was the first one. However, the 2nd and 2rd installments get MAJOR credit for including less filler scenes of the Hobbits -_-'' I don't mind them, but they get really annoying in the first film....

Equilibrium is kind of like the Matrix, but.. not as crazy o_O It's more about the emotional side of a cold future, whereas Matrix is more about how the actual world itself is manipulated. They have similar themes, but in Equilibrium the human emotion (and lack thereof) has a more important role.

I liked the acting in Troy... honestly I never read the original. I was expecting the movie to be better, but I certainly don't think it was awful. I really enjoyed it.
But it's true, Orlando can't act. But we knew this, so why be surprised? haha

Van Helsing: If you can turn your brain off while you watch it, you will have a very fun time. the story hurt my brain, but I really liked the actual visuals and character designs. It was generic and mindnumbing, but very fun to pass the time with.

Favorite movies:

Interview with the Vampire = very good, and it has my favorite performance by Tom Cruise in it.

Reign of Fire = some think it's a little stupid, but it's way fun... tons of fun. Dragons, and a crazy war thing between them and mankind. See it, you'll get what I'm saying.

Dark City = not many have seen it, which is a shame. very dark movie, similar to a cross between Matrix and Equilibrium. The world changes, and the lives of the people are rewritten and recreated... just see it, tons of stuff to think about it in there.

Gladiator = I'm glad to see others liked this film as well... it's just very well done, I think. great composition, good visuals, good music, good story, good characters. Good.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust = lovely lovely movie. I say lovely, because it was such a beautiful film to look at... amazing colors, neat artwork, and the story was moving for me. I was intrigued quite a bit by this one.

I liked Kill Bill... but it's like what was said earlier, the POINT was to be cheesy and awesomely bad XD It was supposed to be over the top!! That was the glory of it... that's what makes it so funny and cool at the same time, imo at least.

Fight club = "You are not your khakis." - tyler durden. (If you haven't seen it yet, you're missing out)

If I think of more later, I'll post 'em I suppose *heh*

PS: Johnny Depp is the MAN. Even if I were a guy too, I'd still dig him. He just plain rocks :P

He just plain rocks :P

wow, you just summed up alot of my opinions and I didn't have to put forth as much effort. and yes Dark City was a good movie.

I wanna recommend "Sky Capitan And The World Of Tomorrow".

hard to say out of so many good films, but some recommendations:

Everything by Stanley Kubrick: Clockwork Orange, Shining, Full Metal Jacket, even Eyes wide shut wasn't bad
The Birds and Psycho of course
The first movies of François Truffaut and J.L Godard from French films
Everything by David Lynch (his films are weird, but also magical)
And some recent favorites: Donnie Darco, Closer, Dogville, Underground (Kosturica's Servian film), Big Fish

Has anyone seen the movie RAN ? It's supposed to be quite good...

Yep, its awesome...Its based on Shakespeare's King Lear. It have battles but its more an art film...Don't expect something like Hero or Flying Daggers.

Apocalypse Now: Redux, by Segio Leone

Its by Francis Ford Coppola (Godfather). Sergio Leone is mostly known as the director of "spaghetti" westerns like "The good, the bad and the ugly".

Fight Club is the best movie ever made

If you liked that movie, you should DEFINITELY read Invisible Monsters.

p.s. - Fight Club < Amelie

Hmmm... with that reaction, I doubt you have the capacity to read a novel in its entirety... so forget the recommendation of Invisible Monsters.

ROFL, I am french Canadian, saw that movie when it was still in theatre with school, and it was absolute shit. This movie is made for the old genrations, not for the youngs, I've never seen anything more boring in my life....

The Fountain (amazing)

Last House on the Left (if you love really gory movies that are realistic)

Irreversible (if you love really gory movies that are realistic)

The Professional (aka Leon) [amazing classic movie]

A Mighty Wind (really funny)

My opinion of the Fountain from an older thread :p

"I thought the movie was pretentious and poorly written lol...

It wasn't the worse thing I've seen though, if I had to commit to a meaning I would say the film was about acceptance of self and comming to terms with the mortality of yourself and the ones you love. In the past and present timeframe Jackman's character was struggling to achieve a physical conquest over mortality (fountain of youth and a cure for cancer). The "peace" he is trying to achieve is symbolized by the woman he loves, she is the outward source he is seeking in the form of the Queen and of his dying wife. However, he is only able to get peace in the "futuristic" Buddhist inspired timeframe where he looks inward to overcome the burden of death in a philosophical sense, he is isolated which represents that the future world is really his mind with his struggle against the tree (I forget the name but it's the one the Buddha Sidharta achieved enlightenment under, I think it's called a Bodi tree, not sure). So, the movie is trying to say that you can't overcome mortality by fighting it, only by accepting it and becomming contented with the struggle within yourself.

I saw this movie ages ago though, but that's what I seem to remember."

Amelie is an OK movie, the best French language film I've seen in a good while was Une Dimanche a Kigali, a very good Rwandan film.

The only live action films of the last year I found really worth the time were There Will be Blood, No Country for Old Men, and Atonement. I liked accross the Universe too, but that's because I'm a Beatles nerd.

Edit: Actually on the topic of French language films, I've been meaning to go see La Vie en Rose but haven't got around to it, I heard the Counterfeiters was a good movie too.

Paranoid Park is an interesting movie out now by Van Sant that has a unique style to it, the films an aquired taste I believe.
