The meaning of Gaara's name was explained by Yashamaru in chapter 131 of the manga: it means " A shura who loves himself". The word shura can trace its roots to the Hindu god Asura. In Bhuddism, it is said to be one of the 6 worlds/places that one can be reborn to, according to one's past life. Shura is for those who died in war or strife. In Japanese it seems also to mean someone who lives a life of constant stife. In Gaara's name only the second syllable, or "ra" was used to mean shura.

!!!!!!!!!! I think you're right!!! Now that you mention it, the last character in Gaara's name IS that buddhist thing... I remember learning about it as a kid when my mom was crazy-buddhist.

Tho there are actually 3 kanji characters.

ok so havin said all that...im still confused lol. what do the markings mean then and how did he get them? or do they mean something that doesnt translate into english properly? i very much doubt it translates to "me love bottle" like KRunJ Zero said, lol. im assuming that was just a translation straight from the characters. having said that, it would be quite amusing if it did translate to that! lol. also, i dnt think they are an injury as nawar says, coz otherwise they wouldnt go on and on and on about how gaara has never been injured before and gaara wouldnt be so shocked when sasuke makes him bleed sayin some crap bout how he doesnt know his own blood, i mean the marks are red so common sense would dictate that he bled. if they were just scratches then they wouldnt have lasted so long.

i know its weird, but its not a battle scar...duh but it really is what his name translates into. haha thats so great, wonder if gaara has an older brother named "i love jug" =]

Baz, read what GoldHorse said. That person has it completely down.

Ra, or Ro in chinese, means Shura--of bubbhist origin. Shura, in Japanese, means "someone who lives a life of constant strife", as GoldHorse said.

So Gaara's name translates into english as such: "A shura who loves himself," again, as goldhorse says.

That's the most correct translation that makes sense right now.

Gaara = "I love death"

Gaara's name is a pun on the phraise "I love death." The Kanji on his forehead means 'Love' which is the 'ai' part in his name.

you know who wrote this right?

*blinks* that was already acknowledged, that its just 'love' on the forehead... ppl went on to discuss what his *name* meant....

OK! In simple terms it means I love death.

But in reality it means a person that loves himself whatever lixie said. So in other words lixie's translation is right...just that people generally think of it as I love death for some explainational reason.

skyz69

that's not quite right either, refer to goldhorse's post on the first page, that is the most accurate interpretation. its closer to 'demon that loves himself', although a transliteration is more like 'i love (de)mon'. well, as close as demon can get to being the same as shura...

Okay, serious reply.
You see him get the kanji in issue 131 of the manga (i've forgotten what episode of the anime it is). It's on pages 11 and 12, just after the attempted assasination by his aunt/carer.
Anyways, the kanji is put there by the sand. Don't know if it's now a scar or what but the sand did it. Thefore, he did it to himself.

It actually has a couple of meanings, depending on your interpretation
In that issue he says "love only yourself." That's one meaning. Gaara also means death, so you could say it means he loves only death. That's also mentioned as his only reason to exist.

Also, as mentioned earlier, it loosely transaltes into 'me love bottle' aka the gourd he wears on his back, which contains the sand he uses in his attacks. It contains the spirit of his mother (i think? Well he calls it mother in issue 111, and mentions feeding it blood and stuff like that). It's also that sand sorcerer/demon that's inside of him. loving the demon like was mentioned earlier

Anyway, that's my two cents. What do you think?

skyz69

as he is presumably the 'ra' in his name, and 'gaa' translates to 'i love', then yes the 'i love myself interpretation holds.

however, i don't really know japanese well, so i don't know but: how did you get your gaara = death and gaara = gourd interpretations? do you mean the same sounds can mean death or gourd?

but the way its written, it doesnt seem that it can mean gourd or death...

That thing about the gourd was mentioned earlier in the thread, i just tried to elaborate on it. That's all
