This is the professor temjin x zarron here to discuss and share what our opinions are on animation as a whole.
Okay I am not trying to put down any style. To me anime and American animation are the same in the sense that I both enjoy watching them. Whether it be Rahxephon or Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, to Naruto or Megas XLR. I am a lover of ALL animation. Now there are something that I wanted to point out before any of you start saying your opinions on this.
1. Most of you already are ready to blast and put down one style of animation (I am going to take a wild guess and say that it would be US animation.) Well if you are going to say it sucks then please explain in detail WHY!! I would like to see that. Also I feel that there are a lo of factors to point out which are
a. culture
b. budget
c. artistic style
d. animation
e. productions (from the top ceo or whatever that give the permission to make the animation)
f. voice acting (the dubbing of anime but also a dubbing of Spongebob in Japanese or any other language.)
so I wanted to know what you all think about anime and US animation with all the factors.

Since He made this thread.
Oh, and I prefer Anime due to the better storylines.
Most of north-american shows don't have a good storyline.

well i sure enjoy the simpsons (made before 2000,i don't even want to watch more recent episodes, too farfetched and stupid.) and futurama, outside of that , marvel related cartoons are about the only good thing. Outside of that, i have to say that american and canadian cartoons made for kids today REALLY suck.
I can't beleive that anime is being produce on the same planet as this trash, let alone being intended for the same age group.

I think some Animation sucks, the plots are retarded, and just void, useless, I like old style cartoons, Tom and Jerry and Looney Toons, and i like some new stuff, Teen Titans, Megas XLR, and some I hate, are like Totaly Spies, Kids next door, ed, edd and eddy...dumb stuff like that that is just about some character(s) with a intelecual level equal to a spider, I hate basicly half the american cartoons because they have no senseable plot, and the characters are lacking in depth:<
Some Animes I like are berserk, naruto, hellsing, and many more, because of the plots, story twists, and most of all, character depth, I mean the fighting, the script, they are all great, bu tthen you get dumb ass animes, like DBZ and DBGT and Gundam*all* I mean, sure good animation, but a lack of depth in the characters, and the plots...omfg are you kidding me, a 5 year old with intelliegence could right better....

When i said that US animation was failing i mean that now it is like kids wont care about US show. (Well unless some extreme advertising is involved.)
I see it like this for a little kid what will they most likely watch. Stuff that you will see on Boomerang/Diseny or Pokemon/Yu'Gi'Oh.

Maybe you haven't seen the japanese version.
I hate the american version so much, voices are stupid, and they even name some attacks that dont even have a name in the original version.
And well, you can't judge an anime if you haven't watched it all, you should watch the japanese version, even the songs are better and they're 296 eps. unlike american version. ( They censored like 30 eps. )

Now DBZ was cool when i first saw it but know it just sucks. I dont care what version because I've seen them both. Japan ver or the US they both suck.

I have to agree with jaime here, DB and DBZ were great, as a fighting anime, it was really splendid, some people seem to forget that it's an anime from the 80's, come on this show as lasted 15 years,, very rare are anime wo do that, DBZ was overused by funimation and transformed into the most basic anime introductor, now, after watching dbz 8 times, whatever you see will make dbz look like crap. But it was totally ORIGINAL, when Toriyama wrote DB, nothing like it ever existed before, it set the bar high for anime to come, then came yuyuhakusho 5 years later, who set another standard for kick ass anime. If we have great fighting anime like naruto and One piece today, It's all thanks to Dragonball. Not to forget other great Toriyama work like chrono trigger and Dragon quest/warrior series

Yeah, and for those who don't know, the creator of Naruto is a big fan of Akira Toriyama ( DB,DBZ Creator ) so if you compare both animes, they have big similarities. ( Like Jiraiya and Master Roshi )
And if we remember the original DB, and we compare it with Naruto, Naruto is a little similar to Goku in DB.
And yes, Funimation ruined it all with the crappy dubs, WTF is that? not all attacks have name and they named them all :x
Oh, and Original Dragon Ball was released in 1983, 21 years have passed now. :o

oh, i taught it was 88, by bad.
about the attack names, one thing that really was stupid is when gohan lunched his first beam attacks, namely the one when piccolo dies.....they dub it kamehameha, sorry but gohan doesn't learn kamehamehas until he is trained under his father, piccolo's attack, which gohan uses is the masenko. Seeing gohan naming the wrong attack really ticked me off

but that is it the Masenko the kamehameha wave all of the moves did the same thing which was blow s**t up!
Away from DBZ now (not trying to turn this into a DBZ thing) but i been notice that anime is just too much freezeing.
What i mean by that is that take Azumanga for example. It is like when they are in the classroom talking when one person speaks (weather it be Osaka or someone else.) everybody freezes. the whole classroom freezes. where as a lot of american animation i seen has a least a little movement in the background. You look in the back and see someone gettig thier food or eating or getting up from thier table.

Close, but not quite. Toriyama started the Dragon Ball manga in 1984. I think the anime started in 1985.
but that is it the Masenko the kamehameha wave all of the moves did the same thing which was blow s**t up!
Yes, they all blow stuff up, but there are differences in the amount of energy consumed to use them, the amount of time it takes to charge them, the speed at which they can move, their destructive power, whether or not their direction can be controlled, etc. People look at the energy blasts and think they're all the same, but Akira Toriyama did in fact give them unique traits. Their names are given to them by whoever created the technique, thusly a move created by Piccolo would not bear the name of the signature move of the Kame school.
Aaaaaanyway, for the actual point of this topic. I like anime, and I like American animation, but I like anime a lot more in general.
Until fairly recently most American animation has been targetted at kids. There have been ones like the Simpsons, Futurama, and Family Guy that have been good, but you can't deny that most are for kids. Recently more and more have been targetted at adults, but many of them I find simply use an immature sense of humor. There are exceptions, and there are plenty of cartoons I'll watch, despite who they're targetted at, but it's still lacking things that I like about anime.
One thing about the Japanese culture that effects anime is that they have a different idea of what is appropriate for kids. Generally if you watch 2 things both targetted at the same age group of kids, you'll see that the anime has many more mature elements in it. Also, if you compare American cartoons and anime, you'll notice that American cartoons in general have a tendency to wrap everything up and return things to the way they are by the end of the episode, and then the next episode has nothing to do with the next, whereas anime usually focus more on a story progression. Think of 'to be continued' messages at the end of episodes, if events carry on into another episode of an American cartoon, they'll show a to be continued message, but in an anime it's just expected, and thus no such message exists.
All there really is to say about budget is that in general anime usually seems to get a higher budget than American cartoons, at least when talking about TV shows. It usually doesn't effect how I like the show. I do generally like the artistic style of anime better, and I know I'm not alone there as you even see American shows trying to mimic it now. I don't have anything to say about the animation of things, since they vary from show to show.
One thing that's really nice about anime is that most of it originated as manga. While some people may not be able to see the significants of this, it's that generally the series' have already proved themselves as being good (or at least appealing to a certain target audience) even before production starts on the anime. Finally, the voice actors, in general Japanese voice actors are much more talented, and can do a wide variety of voices for anime, even while retaining the ability to show emotions. I don't think that American voice actors (in general) can do this nearly as well.

still the same thing to me. It just seems that now anything can blow the planet up.

K but sadly that is the only thing targeted at adults. The simpsons suck now. Futurama has when thru its four season run and Family was canceled untill adult swim saved it.

Well that is true because it seems like most american animation *noticed I said most* just treat everyone like they have only a 22 min attention span.

I am not sure about that. saying that a normal anime season last 26 eps. Well the avg american animation lasts 4 seasons with at least 13 eps a piece.

i agree with you on part of that. American comics are a lot more violent and bloody than the shows that they put on. I wish that they start to do the same thing for anime.
But a far as the voices sound well i thing that if you speak english or any other language other than your native tounge then for an english voice over *person* then it is really hard because they are trying to act out a character to a audence that has heard hundereds of actors or has had or seen a lot of real emotional encounters. So i can understand why a lot of people dont like dubbs. And i thing that the same thing goes around.
I mean i heard spongebob in spanish and in japanese and to me it is just really weird not for the fact that i am used to hearing SB in english but more of the fac that it just didnt sound right to me.
