I've seen a couple, but not for a long while. Anyways, I chose Shurikens because they 1) Sound cooler, 2) Are better known, and 3) Are more stylish.

I choose the Kunai because it is the most used and most versatile weapon in the show. It can cut, be thrown, have explosive notes attached, used in traps, hiden within Jutsu's. Its endless and thats why I think Kunai's are widid kool.

Incorrect. The shuriken may be nicer to look at, but it's less practical and the design/method of use makes it less accurate and 'powerful'.
And as someone else mentioned, it can't be used in melee combat.
I prefer kunais, because in a purely combat sense- they ARE better.

well i think kunai are stronger.. since they look more powerful and are bigger... and as lots of people have mentioned u can use a kunai in taijutsu whereas if u try to do it with a shuriken you will get hurt.

I have a kunai and its more practical than shuriken. You can learn it a lot easier than shuriken. I use my kunai like a combat knife besides throwing it to trees in our compound. Shuriken "whirls" around and usually has a curved motion but kunais are more direct.
There's a big risk having a shuriken in melee combat..

In the special episode, Search for the Crimson Four-leaf Clover, they have traps that shoot kunai...

I pick kunai becasue of their versatility (as everyone else). I know there are many variations on shuriken, but there's one or two of the kunai as well, e.g. Kabuto uses the curved kunai which is intended more for hand-to-hand combat. The kunai are intended to be versatile, that's why it has the ring on. Attaching notes or strings, or bells makes it the weapon for a thinking ninja, imo.

However, let's not forget, that Sasuke showed us that a ninja's arsenal complements itself. Remember how he used a shuriken and a kunai to pin the demon brother's chain?

In the end it's probably a personal preference. I'm sure a lot of people can find a way to use the one or the other in the same situation.

Kunais bore me. They are basically knives.. I like knives, but for them being a knife-type weapon anyway, I could just use a higher quality knife instead, for the same purpose. It's true that a kunai has a hole in it, to tie it up and toss it, etc... but certain knives have handles that could easily have ties around them.

Kunais seem like boring knives to me. If I wanted a knife (which I do :P), I'd want a more elaborate one. -shrug-


Shurikens are cool... I think that if you know how to use them properly, they can inflict more damage (particularly if you can get a great spin going). Especially the really massive ones... (not sure if they're still called "shuriken" or not in that form, though)

What are the problems?
There are more kinds of shuriken than kunai which means each has their own type of weakness.
Kunai's have weaknesses too.But actually its more on the ninja who uses it.A kunai isnt used well if it isn't used in the right way.

If you were in a battle situation, the last thing on your mind would be the style of your weapon.
"I hope it looks nice as it penetrates the skin of my enemy..."
A weapon is a weapon. They are instruments of death; practicality and efficiency is all that really matters.
They aren't supposed to look interesting, so whether or not the design of a kunai bores you, it is a superior weapon...
You can't do more damage with a shuriken, no matter your skill level. A shuriken and a kunai of equal mass, wielded by two ninjas of equal skill- the kunai will do more damage.
It's hardly fair to compare a kunai to a massive shuriken, of course the shuriken will do more damage. Force = mass x acceleration. (So we’ll just ignore that comment ;))
In a fair contest, kunais will always win.

How is that more damage than a throwing knife? Because of the design, shurikens can do little more than annoy. If I were to throw a kunai anywhere in your arm or shoulder, it’s highly probable you will no longer be able to operate that limb. Thigh, calf, knee- you can no longer use your leg. Shurikens can’t inflict that kind of damage, the penetration isn’t deep enough, nor is any slashing damage from a clever spin. As I’ve said- it will hurt, that’s about it.

but my intent wouldn't be to kill ;) (However, if you grind a shuriken into someone's neck [of course, you would hurt yourself by doing this, but not as badly], that'll get it done >_>)
My fighting strategy? Get them away from me, and to hopefully send them away. If they insist on staying, that's their choice, not mine.

Besides... shurikens would usually frighten people more, so the appearance -does- matter. I know most would find it silly, but I think fear is a powerful element in a fight.
Now if your opponent thinks he's invincible, of course, then you're out of luck. But the common enemy? You can intimidate him with simple measures. If you can make your enemy nervous, to some extent, your victory will come more easily.

Confidence inspires fear in the common enemy. Whatever your weapon is, extravagant in appearance or not, if you exhibit confidence in it's use, they will not mess with you lest they don't fear death or harm.

I speak from personal experience. I have scared off enemies from showing even my simple, small blade. So believe me, you don't need shurikens to scare off the less-than serious attackers. Those morons flee the minute you stand up for yourself.

My point- appearance does matter, but a shuriken would inspire no more fear than a kunai.
It's a weapon, the sight of it is enough. In that situation, the type of person who'd run away wouldn't stop to think "Was that a shuriken or a knife?" It's a shiny sharp object that they see! And that is what they run from.

If we're talking about a serious fight, your opponent wouldn't be any more set back from the sight of a shuriken. In fact they would probably understand it's less lethal than a knife.

A kunai is at least ten times more useful than a shuriken, it can be used in jutsus, in seals(kakashi's evil supressor), as a projectile, and for hand to hand combat shuriken has only been used as a projectile attack as far as ive seen in naruto. Shuriken are also capable of inflicting much more damage to an opponent and can be used to immobilize the opponent like how kakashi made zabuza's arms useless. The only reason people underistimate the kunai is because it's not portrayed fully in the anime for example when sakura was fighting the sound guys to protect naruto and sasuke she tricked the guy with replication technique but got like five kunais thrown into her and then a couple hours later during the preliminary matches there was not even a wound on any part of her body, its a cartoon thats why.

Well i had real Kunai and a real Shurikens so thats what i can say about them.

Kunai:
+ Easy to aim (blade is heavier, than handle)
+ Can be used in hand-to-hand combat
+ Heavier than shurikens (easier to throw, harder to deflect, stronger the impact)
- usually less sharper than shurikens
- require a good depth perseption to accurately throw them
- easier to detect

Shuriken
+ Sharp
+ has only 1 blunt axis (kunai has 1 and 2 halves)
+ hardly detectable to the target
+ less dependant on depth perseption
- throwing proccess requires special training
- usually unusable in hand-to-hand combat
- due to light weight - easibly deflectable and requres extreme aim to cause critical injuries

BTW there are no such thing as cool and not cool - they both aren't designed to look nice - they are designed to kill stuff.
