The motley sky of different elements was high overhead. As water met lightning, a hint of sun was still evident behind the cloud masses. This sight would be clearest upon a certain mountain, one that stood above most others. A jovial atmosphere hung about it partly because it was sparsely inhabited, but mostly because of the inhabitance. Struggling to be seen under the foliage, tiled rooftops could barely be seen. Upon further observation, one would be able to distinguish multitudes of these rooftops, scattered all across the top of the mountain. However, the rest of the green mountain remained uninterrupted by these tiled rooftops. The only thing that hampered an uninterrupted tree-land was a long and winding path that seemed arbitrarily made. Instead of a straightforward road up – the shortest way to make that long journey, the road took a snake-like path, traveling in jerking directions. Even the thought of traversing that road was tiring.
It was quite a humble inhabitance… all monks, abstemious in their every behavior, are humble. This struck especially true for the Shaolin Monks. They were not only driven to their abstemious ways by their worship, but also by their training. Each monk trained twelve-hour days. Sleeping at nine and waking at two, they had to run down the mountain and then back up, carrying two pitchers of water attached to the ends of long wooden staffs on their backs. After rigorous training in the different Shaolin Martial Arts, they were given something to eat. Then, after meditation and training of “Na Li”, or the Art of Inner Defense, the monks would train “Chin Gong”, or the Art of the Light Body. Then, it would be some more personalized training before another session of meditation.
That was the life of an average monk.
Especially Cairo. Though this young shaolin monk knew that living the abstemious life was an essential part of early training, he no longer felt the need to live so sparingly. He had advanced above all others in martial arts and mastered his "Yan Wu" Staff Style and was ready to begin "Ba Gua Chuan". These two were considered extremely advanced styles for his age. Most days during practice, Cairo slacked off and watched the clouds instead. He wondered how close he was to those celestial objects... The rest of the young were afraid to tell on him because of his martial arts prowess and so, they left him be. However, the supervisor of the group soon found out that Cairo was slacking. His nickname was, "The Hammer, a name that sounded like one a prison guard or a bouncer should have, not a monk. However, the young monks feared this man. He was massive in size and carried a staff that was ten times thicker than the rest of theirs. He was known for his explosive kung fu style, Da Paoquan or "Big Fist Cannon". One day, The Hammer caught Cairo slacking and took him away to in front of Master Zhuang.
As the other monks peeked in through the windows, they chuckled at how submissive The Hammer was acting in front of the Master.
Big Hammer: Master. I caught Cairo slacking today. I think he's been slacking every day during practice.
Master Zuang: Hmmm. I think I have just the thing for you... come with me.
Curious at receiving a calm acknowledgment instead of a harsh reprimanding, Cairo followed the elderly master into the temple and up the stairs. There, the master took out a scroll from the depths of his long sleeves and began to read it out loud.
Master Zuang: Dear Hong Chi Gong, It is crucial that we have a meeting right away. Please visit the Shaolin Temples.
There was a pause as the old monk rolled up the scroll.
Master Zuang: We've tried to remain independent from The Land Of Rice Fields for too long. We've tried to use the autonomy they've given us to the fullest. But now we realize that even Otogakure can't have all of the autonomy they want. The more we demand, the more they restrain. That's why we need the influence of the Gai Bong - the Beggar Clan - to help us travel to the Daiamo and ask for complete autonomy. We have a petition ready too. Deliver this message to the Gai Bong as quickly as possible.
Cairo accepted it with a solemn face but when he left the room, he celebrated. A chance to leave the mountains! The young monk had heard of Gai Bong. At first, he had laughed at this Beggar Clan. However, during one of the tournaments, Hong Chi Gong, the leader of the Gai Bong had fought Chiao Fong, the leader of the Shaolin Temples. It was clear to everybody that the beggars weren't as meek as their appearance. Not even close to that. Now, he was given the opportunity to go there to deliver a message! This was a chance most didn't get and Cairo would be sure to cherish it dearly.
