So you're going to answer computer related questions or are we going to pool our knowledge in the domain?

I have a bit of knowledge on computers since I used to work as tech support in an electronics store. Though my knowledge is limited to computer malfunctions and hardware(problems and how to build comps and such)

well do u have problems with booting up?
Any programs or devices acting strange?
and how long has this been going on?

@mimi, i don't mind making this a collective pool of knowledge; I just created this because i want some practice before i start my internetworking and troubleshooting job. so basically tech support. that other title sounds so much better though

any ways here is some great free-ware you can use to speed up your computer

www.ccleaner.com/ (http://www.ccleaner.com/) - cleans out junk from your computer and can fix some problems with your registry

http://www.defraggler.com/ - better defragmenter then the one that comes with windows, defragmenting can make your computer run faster, it takes pieces of files that your computer stores throughout the hard drive and puts them together.

www.lavasoftusa.com/ (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/) - scans for trojans and different things. free version is good enough, though i imagine that the purchase version works better(im too cheap to try)

i'll post more good software later

@ Partlink... before the comp didn't even boot up and the power button blinked Amber. Then THE people came in and replaced my MB, IO Panel and Power Supply... turned out the power supply the tech had was defected and didnt work and when he left it somehow turned on. But now i can't plug in the speakers through the MB jack and have to use the jack on the IO Panel and the sound is shitty....

Basically i need a new comp :D

partlink1
02-09-2008, 07:40 PM
they went above and beyond, all they needed to do was replace your power supply, assuming it had shorted anything. but the best i can do for ur speakers is to tell u to reinstall ur sound driver and update it, if that doesn't work, then the either something is disconnected inside or they take really bad static precautions.

Ehhh i know... they said it was company policy to replace all the parts blah blah blah.. Im sure ur familiar with the way tech support works...

Either way imma call em and tell em to give me a new (and better) tower cuz they suck :D (should work i think)

@bobis: all those programs have no viruses or spyware hidden on them if that's what you mean. They're all safe to use and don't mess up your computer, they just clean it. I personally use CCleaner a lot.

Since we're throwing out stuff we use, as for freeware, I use Comodo as a firewall. Works better than the free Zonealarm everyone seems to have.
(link (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/))

I also use A square which is another one of the spyware/malware scanners(link (http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/))

There's also the conventional Spybot which is used for spyware(link (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html))

Note I use all of these and can affirm they're safe and effective ^_^

Do you happen to have any kind of registry protection? Those programs sometimes tend to impede on installation of programs usually when installing, you should close all the safeties temporarily and install then re-activate them.

Will this slow my computer down?

Usually when I install popup blockers, or any type of virus scanner it slows down my computer weather I'm running the program or not.

Yawn*

Interesting thread -_- I can give tips on pretty much all hardware available today that especially cooling solutions.

Software wise I'm not sure i can offer much help in text.

My only suggestion regarding that is : Never install any types of firewalls or pop-up blockers.

Dont waist your time on virus scanners.

Dont waist your hard-drive on any "tune-up" programs.

Install Opera instead of Firefox

If your system's operational system is having problems use registry cleaners such as Tune-up utilities ( i would not recommend using any utilities aside from the registry cleaner )

Clean your temp.

Dont click stupid links.

You know , none knows imo.

So what do we know... How many people use Firefox? And how many people use Opera?

Firefox has bin under a huge hype for 2-3 years now...

And that might sound really good ya know... But is it? The more attention its security gets , the more suitable target it becomes. The more people using it , the bigger "gain" by cracking it.

So... imo i like Opera better and i consider it safer for the future. Its all up to you though

Oh okay, I'll just stick with firefox then. It doesn't really give me any problems.
