Ok, so I haven't been working with PS for too long but I really like it so far. I have made several sigs and sig-like pics. I want your guys opinion on what I have.
This is my current Sig, I put the finishing touches on it this morning:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v158/Zero_Limits/suigetsusig.gif
This is a WoW based Sig I made for a friend of mine. Its a little small, but the sig regulations on his board is on the small side:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v158/Zero_Limits/Tenaron-Sig.jpg
I had a bunch others saved to a pendrive that I carry around. However the other day it decided to break with a whole bunch of data on it. There is a backup....somewhere. Once I find em I'll post them too.

Not bad at all, but blending the stock with the background as well as adding a lightsource will do the sig wonders!
Thanks for the advice. Now here is a photoshop newb question for ya, is there a tool to define the light source, or are you just saying to get an idea of where the light is comming from and work around it?
Here is my first coloration:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v158/Zero_Limits/sakurasig-2.gif
This one took me a while to do... I was just going to color the picture directly from the manga...but the stock was sooooooooooo low rez that it wouldnt work very well. So I made this one from scrap in Illustrator and colorized her in shop. I like how it turned out, but I already know a few things that I should do for my next one.

Your sig could use more of a background. Have different effects, blened, blurred, anything to make it look different yet good. Then the stock should be able to blend in, or atleast feel apart of, the sig.
As for your coloring; it looks good. Just get some more shadow and highlights in there. ^_^
Thanks for the input guys.
I myself like sigs and other things where the stock stands out, to me it gives a sense of focus, that the stock is definetly the main point of the sig, not the background. I think this probably came about because my photoshop sensei used to do that very technique, but I never really liked what he did. Dont get me wrong, he is awesome with photoshop, but I just didnt like his blended work.
However, now a days I have seen some images where the two elements blend and they work really well and in fact I find myself liking them alot. Your FMA sig in particular Chidongan, caught my eye. I think it would probably improve my overall abilities if I tried that technique out. Again, thanks for all the input.

True, everyone has their own likes and dislikes in sigs. Just do whatever you think you'll like. ^_^
I'm glad you like my new sig. I especially love this new style. ^_^
You've inspired me, I haven't made a sig in a good two months. I think it's about time I did.

Hmm what tool ya used for the lines btw =o?
Hmm what tool ya used for the lines btw =o?
For the lines in my coloring? I made them in Illustrator, which is a vector program (your probably knew that, but just in case). Once I got the lines done I converted the vector to pixles in photoshop where I did the coloring.
The lines were REALLY nice before I started coloring. Once I started using my lasso tool to add shadows and things, it cut into the lines making them VERY sketchy looking. I got a new book that showed me how to make the coloring good, without cutting into the lines as bad. Its a bit late for that picture, but hopefully the next one will be cleaner looking.
Right now my next coloring is still in the drawing phases.
I draw with pencil and paper, then scan them to illustrator where I re go over the lines, then I color in photoshop. When I get better I hope to do the coloring in Illustrator too, since it will be more reliable then down converting the vector to pixels, then coloring. But coloring with Illustrator...well lets just say its really silly... :P

Ah thats really nice, never thought u use the lasso tool for coloring tho i like it :D i might wanna get illustrator soon lol =( i made something similar with photoshop doesnt look nice tho'
Wow...it has been forever since I lost posted one of my pics here! Stupid broken pen tablet...I have to call tech support....
Anyway, here is my new coloration, its for Blue Dragon: Ral Grado. The original dragon is just pure blue...blue blue blue and some more blue (I guess you could get that from the title XD) But blue in 100 different shades gets old...so I changed it up a little...I like how it turned out. Tell me what you guys think...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v158/Zero_Limits/Dragon-Coloring.gif
Edit: Oh ya, just an FYI...this is pure vector...no converting to pixles until it was done and I published it in a .gif... I like how the vector program works...perhaps I should change the name to... "Sol's Vector Drawings" XD

looks cool i like the shading and im really lazy to do vecter stuff myself so! you use illustrater or what program? and theo nly this i see a lil off in this is the lil line details are a lil pixely maybe using a bigger brush/line will correct this also try saving in either jpeg or png files gif is for animations
I use Adobe Illustrator to draw. Yeah, I see what you mean, it could have happened in one of two ways...or both...
1: Converting the Vector to Pixles made it look funny.
2: I used too big of a line when drawing in Vector. Sometimes this makes it look blocky.
I think it is the conversion that caused the problem... I'll see if I can publish it entirely in Illustrator...that would probably take care of the problem. Thanks!
Double post no Jutsu! XD

I don't know I think the txt and bg stock work together, but the bg really doe need work ^^ But that's just my opinion.
I love the sig, It'll be up Saturday. ^^
EDIT: Yay I found your thread. ^^
Alright, I actually got done with Oipotty's new sig sooner then I expected. However, there was a point where I just couldn't decide if I should keep this one brush or take it out. So Oipotty, if your reading this you can choose any of the sigs you like the best! Anybody else, C&C?

i like the version with the small amount of lighting, but i think you should cast more light on the actual girl, especially on her left side... her hand and the left side of her face, that would look sweet
Thanks Azure! Do you have a guide on how to do it properly? Because what I did was a pho-lighting attempt and no matter how far away or close the source was it made her look the same as you see her now... :/

Azure Wrath
06-28-2007, 04:35 AM
i dont have a proper guide to it, though i will make one that entails what i will write for you now:
Lighting:
There are numerous ways to do proper lighting, but if you are feeling up to it, you can do ALL of them. So, i will explain a few techniques i use (obviously not all of them, i've found out im notorious for doingthings the long way around)
Ok, firstly:
Selecting your light source:
To add lighting, its pretty obvious that you need a light source. this will add focus on one point in your sig and draw your eye into it, giving you a focus point. So the point you choose is rather important. So take your time in deciding where you wanna put it.
Lens Flares and radial gradient maps:
Yup, new people and photoshop usually means tons of lensflares that have not been blended well, leavign you with a black background, i white flash and red halo's all over the screen. to me, that looks like a mark of inexperience, unless it was intended. however, lens flares can serve as good light sources and does basically the same as a radial black and white gradient.
Both of these can give you a black background with a white flash in the center. Choose which one you prefer, recently, ive jsut gone into gradients instead, but... meh, same diffs i guess. Position them, so the center of the white is on the light source. Then, set the layer to multiplay and play with the opacity. this layer will darken the non-light parts of your sig, usually giving you a black circle around your sig. Work with the opacity until you are happy with the amount of darkens.
Then duplicate this layer and try some other blending modes. In msot cases, overlay works wonders. So does soft light and in RARE cases, colour and linear burn/dodge do miracles. So play around, use your eye to see.
With these layers, you will clearly establish a set point in your sig where your eye is drawn.
Selective Painting:
This proces can be rather painstakingly long, but the results are usually well worth it.
Start off by getting a fluffy, soft, white brush, not too big (judge it be the area you wanna darken/lighten. Then, paint over your sig, all the areas you want to have mroe light. Stocks and text will more then likely be your target. the sides of a stock will gather lots of attention (the side facing the light of course), so work hard to get a realistic lighting effect. you can also swop to a black brush if you feel another part needs some darkening. If you do not wish to go over the lines of your stock/text,then hold in CTRL and click on the layer of your stock/text. This will select all of your stock/text, so if you paint over the selection, nothing will happening, thus constraining your painting to the stock alone.
When you are done painting, set the layer to blending mode of choice, overlay works best for me, with possibly a duplicate layer in soft light with highly lowered opactiy
Common sense + Genius:
Also, work smartly with this, you can achieve very.. deep ideas wit hthis. for example, if you are putting the light source ON a stock's hand, consider having the ligth come from BEHIND the hand. IF you do this, then obviously, there will be no light on the outside of the stock's hand (or very little). So if you create a gradient map/lens flare with the white center on the hand, feel free to delete the part that is on the hand. also, then use a piantbrush to add a white 'glow' to the outline of theh and, to make it even more realistic! Set this layer to overlay again!
thats about it
here is one of my tuts that has some lighting effects in it (and lightning effects as well!) Note the lighting with the mask, how its behind it, how the rays come out of the goggles, how the lighting only shines on one side, etc

Peculiar choice of stock...the mysterious machine cyborgs kick ass...the glowing lights one is i think a LIL BIT better. ^^
Thanks! Yeah, I was just browsing the net when I found that. I had been going through a kinda sig making block for a few days. I tried to make a God of War II sig, but it turned out like cr@p so I tossed it. This one took me a while to make.
The hardest effect to pull off was the ship coming out of the fog. I think I pulled it off well, but it was my first attempt at it, so I don't really know how it turned out to others...
The glowing lights I had planed on adding since I saw the stock. However, I just finished my sig and uploaded it, when I realized I forgot to add them! XD So, I put them on in a second edition, which I the one I carry around.
I also started experimenting with blending my name into the stock itself, instead of having it stand out. I tried it first with the SCII sig, so I continued it on this one. I actually think it looks more like a part of the original stock in this sig, then the SCII one. So yeah, I think I'm going to be doing that for my sigs, unless it's requested not to be done! XD

The text is nice...it matches those things in her hands!
Masterful.
-Sota
Thanks Sota! XD That means a lot.
Yeah, lighting is kinda difficult with this sig design. Because the deep shadows and bright highlights destroy the details of the mist that floats around her. However, after going back and thinking, I may have found a way to give her a decent light source without trashing the bg.
So I tried this lighting trick and I think it works. But Its a little odd looking to me. The highlights are nice, but the shadows around her arms look way to heavy to me. This is caused because her arms are behind the top layer of mist, throwing a big shadow over it. But that is just me...what do you think about it?

It feels just so halo-ish BUT the one thing I DONT LIKE about this sig is the face mask of master cheif....its snowing out side and it shows almost like Cali-ish weather on it! and yes you are getting much better at these if you CAN try to fix it. V2:

V3:

V4:

Now this sig represents two big things in my sig work. One is this is my first use of a C4D. Second I also tried to give the sig an outlandish border. I don't think the cool border is a success, but it was more of a test to see if it would work. Again please C&C, all of which will be appreciated. Thanks.

oooh! v3 is the best out of the bordered ons. V4 would rock, but you need to increase the canvas size further, so the edbges dont cut off at the end of the file. The smudging of dante looks awesome, but the top right could use work... and they musnt connect with the edge of the file, otherwise it looks... bleh
if you fix the edges, V4 ftw!
overall, very cool sig. its not my fav colours, but despite that it still looks REALLY cool

nice sigs its nice to see people that dont always use grunges to create great sigs, i like ur v1 sig. It diffinitly deserves reps for not using brushes and using originality instead, great job man.
however i wouldnt suggest stretching in ur v4 sig, in any case because of the fact ull need to manually edit yourself in order to fix it which i highly dont recommend.
however if u tried to use only photoshops filters for stretching the picture out of its boundries, unfortunatly the stretching filters arent that great and specific, so i suggest when ur designing from the get go, to draw those spikes already outside of the boundries, instead of trying to make them stretch out after u made the design.
ahhh did u distort vashes face or is that dante's face? xD
if u undistort his face, i would love to add gliding glowing effects to that sig, so it looks somewhat like my avatar Lastairbender sig.
A quickie i put together in photoshop :D !
Example:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/kcherla/tutborder.png
FIGURE -1: as you can see this might have been one techinque u could have done by using filters, but as u can see filters are not smart enough to know where the edges are, and cuts them off.
FIGURE -2: this is the proper way to do it, and probably the best way, as you can see i planned out before hand that my image was going to go out of the boundries, therefore i made it that way.
FIGURE-3: Smudging is by far the worst way to make something stretch out of the borders, never consider this as an acceptable way of extending a picture outside the boundries.
Last comments: Remember if your doing a "out of the boundry pic" Always make sure that u save the file as a .png file. And make sure that the backround is transparent in photoshop.
PS: if u want any tutorial on making neat objects by scratch in photoshop, ill pm u. Unfortunatly i cant help people on using image ready for animation in sigs, since i accidently corrupted my own image ready xD
Thanks guys, that means a lot.
I'll definetly try that out afire, thanks for the quick tut.
XD
I'm probably going to take a break from siging for a bit, so that I can finish up my drawing and coloring that I have backed up. So the next few things I post should be those.
Thanks again.

YES!!! its always best to draw things out, when making items on photoshop i always draw them out first. :D drawing is fun isnt it :P
u entering the banner of the week thingy?
Yes, yes it is.
Banner contest? Oh no way, I am not nearly up to par yet. And I really don't have the time to sit and think of a super good one that would do the forum justice enough for me to submit it. XD Maybe when I get a vacation. XP
I guess I'll put up the line drawing for this piece I have been making.
I am kinda conflicted with my line drawings. I always think that the lines and character flow look SO much better when in pencil. But when I put it into digital media, I always like what I can do with coloring and background.
Anyway, the color should be up in a couple of days (would be sooner if I didn't have work! XP). I have already heard some of my forum buddies views on this when I put it in the spam zone a little while back, but I'll make it a bit more permanent by putting it here...

Sol, if you wanna draw/color I recommend Open Canvas, it's a very interesting program. It's basically like photoshop, 'cept the file size is much smaller (about 5 megs) and it's meant for drawing and coloring. It's much easier to do it on OC.
Oh I dont use photoshop for drawing. I only use it for working on the background and maybe the decals on the character.
My drawings are done with pencil and paper, then I transfer them into Adobe Illustrator, where I do the bulk of the work.
But I'll check that out, see if I can torrent a version or something...

Okay, so I said I was going to take a break from sig'in for a while. I guess I lied. XD
Anyway, here is Oipotty's request. You can pick it up here Oi, and if you want anything changed feel free to ask. XD

wow! very very funky and cool! I can only advise a border around selected parts, parts that dont stick out.
Thanks for the tip Azure, I took your advice as much as possible. What do you think about this version?

Edit: Whoops, found a little error with the border... fixed now...
Edit Edit: GAH! Even more mistakes! XD

That sig kicks ass Sol.
Thanks everybody! XD
That is actually my first "Out of the Frame" sig, that really worked.
This one has kinda inspired me to keep working on it. I'll see what I can make when I get home from work.
Seems my best work only comes around when impending doom looms! :P
Pretty good sig mate. One of the better pop-up styles I've seen..
I'll give you more / better advice when I see you make a sig-sig.

I'll try a more traditional one after this one.
So here is another pop out one. This one I am putting into my sig rotation. Can I get some C&C please? Any comments are very much appreciated! :)

wow......that's pretty tight.
9.5/10
I have that C4D Render.
Good render, good use, good c4d use, decent enough name (although the outerglow would be better white)
if the background were slightly more interesting just above the snowboarder, it would be perfect.
Is the "out of frame" background supposed to look like that? Or isn't even meant to be there? Other than that, very good! Maybe you should take the "out of frame" background away completely?

wow, dude u did a great job 10/10, now this is a great example of how a c4d is supposed to be used! Technically its up to you if you want the text name to be inside the borders or not, i prefer inside the borders.

Nice dude. Nice work with c4 and everything
You shoulda done something with his board...
His design is cool as it is but you could make something better
Thanks for all the input everybody. I tried to get in as many of what you suggested as possible.
*Extended the C4D behind him a little more
*Added effects to his board
*Changed Text Glow to White

That is what I was kinda going for. Without that background, it doesn't look like he is leaping out of anything. So technically without a frame... the image doesn't leave the frame. (Confusing? Probably, I'm tired and going to bed soon, lol!) Also, if there were no frame there, then the image would just be a render with a C4d behind it. XP
I really like what Afire does with his out of frames and how varied they are. After this next one (which I promised was going to be more standard), I'm going to practice with changing how the image pops out of the frame instead of just, everywhere. XD
Again, thanks for all your input guys.
Oh, and before I forget. If there are anybody out there that want an update to an old (& probably crappy) sig I made for them: You can ask to have the sig redone, or I can make a new one for you entirely. Same goes for anybody that would like to request one.

SHIT!! You havent updated in quite a bit..
Yeah... I know.
I have really only made one sig that I am proud of in these past couple of months. So I didn't really feel like putting it up...
Anyway, it is one of my favorites...

Edit: I still have some reservations about it, tho. The background on the far right is meh... need to work on that
