View Full Version : One Piece, why you should watch

One piece is a long(much longer running then Naruto, bleach, FMA) series about a boy(probably about age 16) and his quest to become the Pirate King(by finding the legendary treasure, "One Piece").

He does this by gathering a crew, which he becomes passionately attached to, and traveling the high seas. Along the way he meets many enemies which provide some of the best anime-fight scenes imaginable. Always mixed with a high element of humor, the series goes for straight up entertainment.

There have been 4 large story arcs now, although there are many smaller ones within. The fillers for this series(the anime is really close to the manga these days) are exceptional and often integrate seamlessly to the canon plot.

Due to the existence of a powerful fruit(devil fruit) which grants anyone who consumes it varying powers or abilities depending on which fruit, there are countless enemies which the main cast are forced to adapt to.

Overall, Its a really quality anime which has been running so long for a good reason. Use the download thread to find the episodes, or just youtube it. I recommend japanese with english subs as opposed to the english dub version... English dub just sounds so lame. Plus, blood is of course edited out.

Anyways, enjoy. Realistically, what do you have to lose?

i have seen the dubs (few ep only for obvious reasons. f**king censorship)
the animation is kinda weird but its not a problem

what is so great about it?
how does it compare to bleach, naruto?

eps i watched were in the middle of story so i had no idea what was going on (one was with main character walking in mountains with sick girl (the one with blue hair i believe) and were there fireworks?)
other was with big guys fighting (a reindeer i think)

so the question
what is so great with one piece that makes it the most popular anime/manga ever

Does it have much fillers? Can u atleast note which episodes are fillers if u dont mind D: or are they gaps between the fillers?

Davis

There are fillers yes, but not many. In the middle or between each arc there'd be one or two. At most I think the longest filler arc was ten. Watch em all tho since I skipped a few I thought would be fillers and got confused.

Also, it is the number one anime in japan, nuff said.

well, not exactly.
I have seen enough weird shit "made in Japan" which easily make your argument invalid. :D

I think wikipedia outlines the filler arcs... but they are good and short enough that they are worth watching anyways.

What Makes it good: Lighthearted comedy, often really funny. Easy to fall in love with the characters in the show and watch them interact. The series is well over 250 episodes now, well well over, and it still maintains the comedy element that it started out with.

The fights are often epic, the biggest ones going on for many episodes involving each of the main crew pushing everything they've got to the limit. In these fights that are some wicked "shivers" moments that you want to rewatch a few times.

The anime starts off pretty well, maybe a bit slow in a few parts, but once they get to the Grand Line(you'll understand once you start watching) things start going off the hook. EVen before then though there are some huge fights, Luffy fights a dude who is basically fast like Rock Lee with long cutting claws on his fingers. Later fights a merman who can bite through bone.

The diversity of powers is what make the series so interesting in the long run. Luffy is a rubberman. He can stretch, blow himself up, etc, but watching him having to adapt his own abilities to the skillsets of his enemies is really interesting. THe fights aren't quite as smart as Naruto fights but are more of a go at it until someone can't anymore. Just a different style(ie, Luffy doesn't do many things that blow your mind in terms of how smart he is... in fact, hes often pretty stupid).

Luffy's crew has to fight and deal with other pirates and the Marines and later, with the marines, the world government. Endless supply of enemies. And in terms of wierd on-the-seas phenomenon etc, the author of this series was full of imagination to keep us interested.

Anyways, thats sortof my bid for one piece.

Episode 300 aired this weekend and i already loved it. I guess if this section is going to be active we have to start making episode and chapter release threads.

And convince people as to why One Piece is more than your average Shonen.

Well, it was ranked #4 or 6 about 2 years ago and lower later on a ranking system (i dont quite remember the exact details)-- And i think it usually has more higher ranks than Naruto or Bleach.

But you are right on one thing-- One Piece is ranked #1 somewhere. It is not the Anime but the Manga. One Piece Manga (448 chapters so far) is the top ranked shonen Manga in Japan. It is also the #4 ranked most serialized/sold manga of all time in Japan (these numbers may be off since i am speaking off the top of my head).

I think i should or someone should put this up. The One Piece Dub is one of the worst dubs i have ever watched in my whole life. The first time i saw the dubbed episodes i almost cried.

It was completely butchered.

Well, this is what almost every true OP anime fan will tell you.
I was soo glad they dropped it.

Yeh, Im on par with that statement. Its like they wanted to make a dub so they went to a childrens playground and picked 5 random kids to be their new voiceactors. And at recess every day, the kids come in to the studio to do the VA's.

Then they gave Sanji a sucker instead of a cigarette, haha although I can understand that a little more.

But yeh, don't judge OP on what you've seen on YTV. You'd be cheating yourself outof good anime.

Screw this im going to watch this anime. Fighting and the animated fights are probably the most important things I look for in an anime.
The way you explained it seems like it is a better anime than at least Fushigi Yuugi, and I really enjoyed fushigi yuugi, the top 5 anime in my list.

No other anime has ever beaten naruto, bleach, my-hime, or full metal alchemist in my list though, but im sure fushigi yuugi might be moved in the 5th spot and be replaced by One Piece if this anime is really that good.

I actually wan't my-hime to be beaten, that anime is in my 2nd top anime (bleach in 1st) and whatever anime that beats my hime will probably have my greatest passion pleasure of masturbation for free.

edit: This anime better have perfectly hot drawn girls too with no huge boobs. Anime drawned girls are also one of the most things I look for in an anime ;)
Imagine an anime with pure male characters!

okay. first 10 episodes are being downloaded.
i do not know how i can pull it off with 10 gb limit but in a year time i might watch 300th episode.

i consider this series more of an adventure type than action type though, and imo, the fight scenes are nothing special, while they still can be very interesting to watch. So far I was only blown out of my seat from a fight once, and that was Gear 2nd.

Of course if any of you watched H x H, you know that anime also has fights but isn't really action-oriented but still kicks major ass.

OP kinda just, hooks you I guess, no explaining it, you just have to watch it.

Hiyo
03-13-2007, 05:31 PM
Ya exactly as KN said. The fights aren't anything to cream yourself over but after you dedicated so much time to the series you look forward to them.

ALthough Luffy in gear2 was hot. Too bad fillers had to go spoiling it.

I just finished downloading episodes 1-10 on bittorent, I am going to watch in a few minutes.

If the first 5 episodes still don't get me a just a tad bit entertained then I am going to stop watching, because I have other shows on TV (non-anime) like grey's anatomy to start watching and such. I have so many things to watch that are trying to be squished into my time right now.

Usually in anime by the first 2-3 episodes it should be getting better anyway.

First 10 episodes may help but to get hooked that may not be enough. One Piece is not good because it is some super awesome anime from beginning to end. No way.

the fact is if it is not that many hear people yapping about how good it is i am sure a lot of the current fans would have dropped it a long time ago just from the first few episodes.

Look at One Piece as a roller coaster ride. That is the best i can come up with. And when you get into it it becomes more of a part of you than something that blows your mind (which of course isnt possible for a series over 300 episodes).

Yeah-- a Roller Coaster Ride is a good analogy

so basically OP is like mary jane.

and then you are hooked and wait impatiently for next weekly dose.

The manga even does a much more effective job at this than the anime.

Thats why One Piece fanatics call Oda-sensei a god

Only few mangaka have i ever heard many of their fans giving them some acolades. Even the most analytical readers are barely able to predict anything. And When it seems the pace is getting boring something comes out of nowwhere that almost makes all the previous bore-- whittle away like it never existed.

it is not a publicity campaign- but i will say it again- it is not #1 in japan for nothing (the manga). and of course the anime is usually ranked higher than Naruto and Bleach.

I was already ahead of you on that and I am on episode 42 right now.
It is a pretty good anime, it has been pretty sad in some episodes including the arc it is in right now about nami's hometown.
I decided I will watch until the series is over. It'll take me a while to catch up with everyone at episode 300.

Just finished watching tenth episode and I think, I understand why One Piece is so popular.

It is not about saving the world, amazing, flashy fights or uncovering a mystery which can shatter your core beliefs.

It is adventure.
Leaving everything behind, standing proud on the ship, sailing where wind takes you. Everyday brings new experience, new challenge.

When you sit on the bus, waiting for another boring day in school or office, you long for an adventure. So you open One Piece manga and read about Luffy and his friends, traveling on their ship through fantastic world, wishing you could be part of the crew.

Anime is just adventure put in motion.

Damn, after reading several reviews i decided to watch one piece and decide for myself...

At the begining i thought the animation was a bit different from that of the series im used to. but after 2 episodes i got used to it easly.

And i agree with that Lukasz said, its all about the adventure, i have watched only 6 episodes so far but damn its really well done, the fights, the action, even the emotional touching parts it has a bit of everything without showing off great powers or graphic effects, it has a solid story that seems pretty interesting so i guess there is one extra one piecer from today :D

And what i like the most so far is the comedy, this series is hilarious has lots of fun, mixed with serious parts and touching parts aswell. but im a comedy fan i love jokes and humor. plus it is an anime about pirates , pirates rock (pirates of the caribbean some of the best movies ever ) so i will continue to watch

Yeah the series is damn funny, lots of laugh thats just awesome. and i bet mad action is yet to come so its pretty good, what hooked me so far is the comedy, they make fun almost out of every situation. At the begining i thought it was a bit too kidish but damn its fun and also i've read that action parts later on the series are pretty good so im looking forward to it :)

In other words: if you think it's good now, just wait.

i really become glad when anyone gets hooked at earlier episodes. Critically episode bn #1 & #20. if you are hooked now-- then despite your dislikes later you will be hooked forever.

Like i have said before-- One Piece isnt about cool-ness like say Kakashi in his cool ninja get up, or itachi, or Kurosaki in Ichigo. It is an adventure. It has all elements of shonen- action, nakama, good storyline, Unexpected plot twiss, etc - and comedy + fun. I mean what will you expect from pirates. It is an advenTURE. From emotional, to funny, to foolish scenes--- with great action-- almost everything.

steve

yeah, if thats what you like then you will love O-P. Again, I think of it as a comedy-action series. If you are just watching for KILLER FIGHTS like Bleach or Naruto you are going to get bored of waiting(although there ARE killer fights) but there is alot of character interaction. You really get a sense of how close Luffy is with his friends so when bad things happen, it effects you too directly.

I just got through ALL 310 episodes recently. It took forever to download all of them, and watch them. But I have to say, that One Piece is without a doubt one of the better animes out there.

The characters are all loveable, goofy, smart (each in their own way), and strong. This show emphasizes more than anything, that you should always look after those who are close to you, and never, ever give up on your dreams.

Even at episode 310, and about 450 or so manga episodes, there is STILL tons of adventures to come, and I can't wait to watch and read it all.

I got through all the episodes from 1-310 in about 48 days, lol. Between working 10 hours a day, and not being able to sleep much, I had plenty of time to watch them all, and just enjoy each adventure they embark on, and laugh at every way each character has a goofy or in nami's case a scary side :P

Downloading all those episodes took a long while as well. Each 100 episodes took about a week each.

I am new comer to one piece and i must say the english dubs do not due it justice. Just the changes in voice alone make a difference. Its a different flavor of anime and the drawings are weird but its a refreshing change. I equate it to hunter X hunter which was off color as well. Both started somewhat slow but around episode 10 or so you are an addicted.

its not very often that you lose your mind watching a one piece ep, but its often that you walk away just feeling generally satisfied and entertained. Not as good as some of the other big animes but a great weekly download and discussion for sure

Currently on episode 221. And it's my top anime of all time.

This is the only anime I watch now. The fight scenes, and story overall is pretty good. But what I love most is the comedy. It makes me laugh hard. ^_^

I have been watching the OP dub since it first came out on Foxbox way back when. I love this show but reading you all talk about the sub version is making me want to go back and watch the sub from the beginning. One Piece is an awesome show, and if Shaman King is any indicator (another foxbox show that had a terrible dub) the sub is going to be a million times better than the dub version. Looks like I am going to set sail all over again (damn it so much anime so little time).

One Piece is the best anime I've ever watched.
There is nothing more worth watching then OP. Try it out.
Best story, drawings, fights and jokes. It is so damn exciting!

Just started reading the Arlong Arc (I'm way behind, I know)
I really love this Manga, it makes me feel like a little kid, anxious for adventures, lol.
Can I ask if you guys think that the Anime is as good as the Manga (I only watched until the end of the Buggy Arc)? Or should I just stick with the reading?
Anyway, this was a GREAT surprise.

lLOL definitly watch the anime, it is 100x funnier than the manga, and yes the anime is also equally as good most of the time, and u feel more involved in the adventure.

Pfffffffs.I have watched some episodes of the OP especially the ones between 290-315 or so.It is awesome.I cannot imagine how good to start from the beginning. It must be awesome. But with the f.ckin limit of 4gb,it may take forever to catch up the anime.Besides, there are lots of things to do in that 4gb :( Anyway,at least better than nothing.Guys who have never watched this anime, watch it.It is more than worth watching.I am surprised at myself's skipping OP although I do follow many manga and animes, when I watched those OP episodes.

I recommend the anime over the manga(I read/watch both) but at least up to the point where the anime stops watch it. It adds more things to it and it is funny as hell.

On top of that the fillers can also keep one entertained. The manga really is good though^^.

Love this anime. On episode 115 already.

1 thing that does bother is that almost no one dies. Only reason that it bothers me is because they never truly defeat anyone.

i am currently at episode where there is competition with other group of pirates

kinda boring so i stopped watchin it. like half year ago (damn. time goes fast)

anyhow. One Piece is kinda repetitive, although it is one of the funnier anime out there (long lasting)

ya, after you've watched it for awhile, you start to get used to the goofy looking characters... but I know what you mean, that was my problem with the series at first too

well i vouch for one piece. i havent seen the manga or watched any undubbed episodes but it makes me laugh almost every time and its got enough action and even more sometimes to keep you hooked and its got a good story and basically its a well rounded show with even more sometimes. to me a well rounded show is a 9 out of 10 and this is definately a 9 to me. bleach is an 8 but i like it a lot for some reason so i watch it more:P and ive only watched naruto a couple of times but that is like an 8 too...dbz is a 10:P just cause it was my frist manga/anime i ever watched and i love dbz:P

but yeah this is an awsome show so watch it lol

oh got. You mean you never watched subbed one piece Bean?

jesus. WATCH IT NOW!

one piece can get pretty badass from time to time. Not too often (it ain't Bleach) but it has its moments.

i started to watch OP again.

ya, its not bleach but it is a decent way to spend 22 minutes once a week. Most of the episodes are good for a laugh at least(if you like japanese humor) and the storyline is an incredible combination of simple, Powerup and fight the new badguy, meeting complex twists and surprises, meeting ludicrous scenarios.
The fights always deliver in the end, and the main strawhat crew is 100% likeable.(altho chopper gets on my nerves from time to time)

i hate the anime and manga

Have you watched or read either one enough? If you tried one chapter or one epsiode, of course you'll hate it. I can easily say I would have hated 85% of the manga and anime I've watched/read if I didn't give them a chance and go on.

The manga is AMAZING. It's just pure epic win. Read it.

Gonna give this a try since all of the other main animes are pretty much in suck-mode right now :P

I love one piece its one of my favourites animes. Yeah it may be ridiculous at times but that's what i love about it. It's about friendship, adventures, comedy and a good fight. All the the strawhat crew have different personalities and that's what makes it so special. It's not like most animes like bleach and naruto(i enjoy both by the way) where there are a lot of similiar personalities. Plus no humour is as good as the one piece humour it's just great. If you want a serious anime then this is definitely not for you.

I love all the characters but Zoro is definitely my favourite. Where else apart from one piece would you find a character who's got amazing sword skills and great strength but would get lost in his own bedroom....the guy has no sense of direction at all.
